Why anaar?

Anaar means pomegranate.

The name comes from the anar buti, a pomegranate motif that has long appeared in Rajasthani block printing, part of the same visual language as the cloth we work with.

Cut a pomegranate open and most of the anaar & co. palette is already there: deep red skin, bright pink seeds, green leaves and warm cream pith.

There is something else we like about it too. Pomegranate rind has traditionally been used in textile dyeing and printing, so the fruit belongs to the process as much as it does to the pattern.

And, rather conveniently, it is not a fruit that knows how to be inconspicuous.

Neither do we.

It starts in Jaipur

anaar & co. is shaped around the way these pieces are actually worn, carried and lived with; what earns space in a wardrobe, what travels well, what feels easy to reach for again.

Jaipur is where the pieces are made.

We work directly with the workshops behind them, choosing prints from their existing blocks and developing shapes and proportions for our collection. That relationship matters because the print, the cut and the finishing all need to work together, not arrive as separate decisions.

What we stand for

Good things should be used

A bag should carry more than one version of your day. A jacket should work over the clothes you already own. A nightsuit should be soft enough that you keep reaching for it. If something only makes sense for a special occasion, it probably does not belong here.

Small is enough

We would rather make fewer pieces well than fill a catalogue for the sake of it. Our runs stay small, and when a print is finished, we are happy to let it have had its moment.

The hand should still be visible

We like the tiny shifts in print, stitching and placement that come from making things individually. They are not defects to smooth away; they are evidence that a person was involved.

The founder

I grew up in Delhi, was sent off to boarding school young, and have been packing and unpacking ever since. New York came next for a while, then Amsterdam; first because of my husband, and then because I quite unexpectedly fell for the place myself. The light, the bikes, the flowers everywhere, and the way twelve degrees somehow counts as terrace weather.

anaar & co. really began on a tram.

I kept spotting women carrying Indian hand block printed bags around the city. The prints felt instantly familiar to me, but the products often did not quite match up. One day I looked closely at a bag and saw threads starting to come loose at the seam, and something clicked.

The love for Indian print was already here. I just wanted the shapes, finishing and quality to feel every bit as considered as the cloth itself.

So I started putting together a small collection of pieces I would genuinely want to wear, carry and keep around: good cotton, joyful prints, useful shapes, and direct relationships with the workshops in Jaipur that make them.

More than anything, I want opening an anaar & co. parcel to feel like a small happy moment. The kind that makes you send a photo to a friend before you have even put the packaging away.
